Abstract

This paper explores the use of apexification as a treatment modality for
chronic periodontitis, particularly in cases involving teeth with open or immature
apices. Chronic periodontitis, a prevalent inflammatory condition affecting the
supporting structures of teeth, can lead to significant tooth loss if not managed
effectively. When it occurs in teeth with incomplete root formation, traditional root
canal treatment may be challenging due to the lack of a natural apical constriction.
Apexification, a procedure aimed at inducing the formation of a calcified barrier at
the root apex, becomes a vital treatment option in such cases. This paper reviews
the pathogenesis of chronic periodontitis, specifically addressing cases where
apexification is indicated, and explores the different materials and techniques used
in apexification procedures. The discussion includes case selection criteria, the
step-by-step process of apexification, potential complications, and the long-term
outcomes of treated teeth. The aim is to provide a comprehensive overview of
apexification as a critical component in managing chronic periodontitis with
immature root apices, highlighting the importance of correct material choices and
meticulous technique to achieve successful outcomes
